EGR Valve

The Transporter T4 2.5 Tdi 5 cylinder engine EGR Valve.

There are two variations of the EGR valve depending on year of manufacture, most of the pre 98 models do NOT have the "anti shudder valve" incorporated within the EGR unit which can be seen at the top of the picture, most post 98 T4 models have the "anti shudder valve" fitted. The diaframe at the front houses the plunger, which releases the recirculated exhaust gasses, this device is of course found on all EGR valves. Both the shudder valve and plunger are controlled by two separate solenoids, which can be found at the rear of the engine bay.

The cleaning of the EGR is relatively easy on the T4, the more thorough route is to remove the EGR and inlet manifold and completely check and clean both, but of course removing of the inlet manifold requires more tools and skill, normally the EGR valve needs checking and cleaning only and you will find the throat of the inlet manifold is partially blocked and can simply be cleaned carefully with a cloth (be very careful not to drop any larger lumps of debris into the inlet).
